Basically, there are three main types of diabetes. They are Type 1 diabetes (juvenile diabetes), Type 2 diabetes (adult diabetes) and gestational diabetes. Diabetes occurs due to different reasons and each kind of diabetes has to be treated differently.
Type 1 diabetes – This is otherwise known as juvenile diabetes and normally occurs in very young children. In a normal healthy person, glucose is released in small quantities. The amount of glucose that is released depends on how much food is consumed by the person. The glucose that is released from the pancreas helps to supplement the glucose that is not present in the blood. This ensures that there is not much or too little glucose present in the blood.
A person having juvenile diabetes finds that this glucose is not being properly distributed all over the body. It just gets accumulated inside the blood alone and can cause many problems in the body. The person can experience dehydration since he is secreting large amounts of urine because extra glucose is being released from the body. He will also lose a lot of weight since the body is not absorbing sugar. When the body does not absorb the right amount of sugar, the fat cells in the body get broken down and this condition is known as DKA or Diabetic ketoacidosis. This can cause damage to vital organs in the body like heart, kidneys and the nerve cells. This can cause the person to have a heart attack or a stroke since the arteries and veins are affected.
Type 2 diabetes – This is also known as adult diabetes. This normally occurs due to bad food patterns and low levels of physical activity and is now becoming very common among many young men and women. The main reasons for this kind of diabetes are severe obesity, a stationery lifestyle, intake of food that is high in fat, which leads to high levels of fat in the blood and also high blood pressure. Certain people are more susceptible to diabetes due to their ethnic origins and people who are old are more likely to fall prey to diabetes. Diabetes type 2 has a close relationship with obesity, so one of the way to prevent type 2 diabetes is by maintaining a healthy weight level. Gestational diabetes – This normally occurs in at least four percent of pregnant women. When pregnant women are diagnosed with gestational diabetes, they might end up having a miscarriage or the baby that is born might have some birth defects. But if the expecting is administered with the right kind of medical care then she also can give birth to a healthy baby. Women who have gestational diabetes would have been overweight even before they had conceived. Other people in their family might be diabetic or they might have had a stillborn baby through a previous pregnancy or would have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes during the previous pregnancy.
