Gestational Diabetes an Overview

Gestational diabetes is a term to describe a condition where someone gets diabetes while there is no diabetes found before. This condition only occurs on pregnant women and until now there is no real cause known for this disease. However, lately some researches done on medical field shows some evidences to what are the causes of gestational diabetes.

During pregnancy the fetus gets all the nutrition needed from the mother that is transformed trough placenta. This placenta is a kind of channel that will distribute the nutrition and also hormones that are required by the baby to develop its body correctly. This is a natural thing and there is no problems should occur. However, on some cases these hormones can affect the mother’s body abilities to produce insulin. This is where the problem appears since insulin is a very vital hormone we all need.

Our body needs insulin to process the sugar intake come with our foods then turn the sugar into energy we need to keep our body to works properly. When the insulin production is disturbed our body comes to a condition that is called as insulin resistance. When this happen for long time, the pregnant mother experiences a condition where her blood sugar levels are higher then normal, usually called as hyperglycemia.

Gestational diabetes condition doesn’t occur on every pregnant woman, maybe since they have different kind of lifestyle and diet, however, some researches show that this condition affects around four percent of pregnant women in the US country alone each year. So far, there is no study and researches regarding how many pregnant women diagnosed to be affected by gestational diabetes worldwide.

Up to know, there is no real reason found why some pregnant women don’t have gestational diabetes while and others are affected. All the ideas that appear are still just based on assumptions and opinions. However, some researches found that there are several factors that probably can make the development of gestational diabetes risk become higher.

Some researches and studies shows that most of the time Gestational diabetes occur in pregnant women at thirty five years range or older. And usually these women have a PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome) history in their life. Mostly they have obesity and overweight problem. Several of them have a gestational diabetes history in their previous pregnancies. Several of these pregnant mothers have a type II diabetes history in their family.

Currently, it is a common practice where all pregnant mother, no mater how old they are when pregnant, to have a gestational diabetes test. It is due to the fact that in the last few years this condition becomes a common condition among pregnant mothers. If you are pregnant, look at the paragraph above and see whether you have some risk factors described over there. If you have one or more factors, it is suggested for you to do some tests during your pregnancy. The first test should be done at least on your first trimester, then do another regular test during the following trimesters.

One important advice when you are diagnosed to have gestational diabetes is, you need to try your best to keep calm and don’t panic. The condition alone can affect your body so there is no need to add more stress that will only make more harm to you and even the unborn baby. You need to consult with your doctor to get a professional advice regarding your condition.
