Preventing Diabetes
Diabetes is a disease that has wrecked the lives of many people and has also cause early deaths in many cases. Apart from gestational diabetes, there are two other types of diabetes. People who are having Type 1 diabetes or juvenile diabetes have contracted a disease, which cannot be normally prevented. But the latest research shows that there might be ways of preventing type 1 diabetes.
But people can prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes. One of the first steps involved in preventing type 2 diabetes is looking for early warning signs. If many people in the family have been previously diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, then doctors would say that a screening test for type 2 diabetes should be conducted once you are reaching 30 years old. There are two ways of preventing type 2 diabetes. One is through medication and the other is through change in lifestyle.
Many people can prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes by making some simple changes in their everyday lifestyle. But people who are old or have had type 2 diabetes running in the family or belong to an ethnic race that has been affected by Type 2 diabetes for centuries cannot be protected from the disease. But changes in the lifestyle of a person can help to prevent diabetes. Some of the changes that can be affected are:
Obesity – people who are overweight or obese should make all possible efforts to reduce weight. Following a strict diet chart and also following a regular exercise routine everyday can do this.
High blood pressure – People who suffer from high blood pressure stand a very high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. They can reduce their blood pressure levels by reducing their intake of alcohol as well as cigarettes. Certain types of medication also help in reducing your blood pressure.
Sedentary lifestyle – This is one of the most important factors to be considered when it comes to preventing type 2 diabetes. Increasing your daily levels of physical activity can go a long way in preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes.
High levels of fat in the diet as well as blood – When you reduce the amount of fat that you consume everyday, the levels of fat in the blood or the triglyceride levels will also be reduced automatically. This will also help in preventing diabetes.
Medication to prevent diabetes – Latest research has proved that certain medicines can now be taken in order to prevent type 2 diabetes. Glucophage is one such medicine that reduces the chances of Type 2 diabetes by 31%. It has also been proved that certain diet medications also help in preventing diabetes. But this could also be due to the fact that they reduce other risks like obesity.
It is not possible to treat gestational diabetes by prescribing medicines. This can only be treated by controlling excessive weight gain.
