The Role Of Exercise In Controlling Diabetes
A regular exercise program or any sort of physical activity carried out on a daily basis will be helpful in lowering blood sugar levels. Exercise also increases our energy levels, improves the heart and promotes an emotional well being. Exercise programs ranging in duration from thirty minutes to one hour a day are recommended. Such exercise programs will gradually reduce the concentration of glucose in the blood.
Will exercise help type-1 diabetic patients?
It has not yet been established by researches that exercises would help in controlling type-1 diabetes. However the health benefits offered by exercises cannot be underestimated. Exercise was proved to bring down blood glucose for a short period of time. This is the reason why exercise is recommended for the patients of first type of diabetes.
Note that in some cases exercise is known to elevate the blood glucose levels if the blood glucose levels of the person were beyond a particular level before exercising. So these patients must always check their blood glucose levels at three stages. 1) Before they start exercising 2) While the exercise is in progress 3) After the exercise is complete.
In this way possibility of any negative effects can be eliminated. This is a very important safety precaution.
Will type-2 diabetic patients be able to derive benefit from exercise?
Do not live a lethargic or lazy life. Such lifestyles form the major cause for the disease. Remaining idle will also make you obese. Regular exercising along with limited diet will work wonders gradually as far as type-2 diabetes is concerned. The main complication of this type of diabetes is ‘heart disease’.
Exercising lowers the levels of saturated fats and keeps the blood pressure under control. Irrespective of the type of diabetes which an individual has exercising will definitely do good to all. You will feel fresh after performing the exercise. So you will remain active even after the exercise gets over. It is sufficient even if you go for a brisk walk for thirty minutes a day. What are you going to lose in going for a walk.
So do not give any lame excuses. Whenever you hear the word ‘diabetes’ the word ‘exercise’ must also come to your mind. No need to do strenous exercises that make you gasp for breath. Make it a point to consult your physician in case you suffer from any other health ailments like sneezing. Such people have to stay away from certain kinds of exercises.
